Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3.x Content Migration

Thinking about migrating a Joomla 2.5 site to Joomla 3. Can I copy Joomla 2.5 articles to a New Joomla 3.x install using phpmyadmin without any trouble? Are there any changes in db structure for articles or categories?

Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3 is a one click update. Since Joomla 3 is STS (Short term supported) release, the update is not shown automatically in Joomla Update Manager page.

  1. Go to Admin Site->Update Manager and click on Options button on Toolbar.
  2. Now a dialog box is shown. Change "Update Server" option to Short Term Support. Click Save and Close button.
  3. Now go to Extensions->Update tab and click Purge Cache button on Toolbar.
  4. If not go back to Update Manager again, you can see the 3.0.x update available, click Install the Update button to upgrade to Joomla 3.0.
